I don't think the interviewer is that bad - I think it's the medium. The satellite link cuts that split second of response time that humor requires making it a little awkward. I thought it was a witty exchange all around

Wow, I'm so glad everyone else thought that interviewer was a dick. He has no idea what he's doing. Notice that Letterman only makes jokes when he's interviewing un-funny people. Whenever he interviews a comedian he just sits back and let's em do their thing.
