It's a traditional folk/country/bluegrass song that has been around since the mid nineteenth century. There have been several versions with several sets of lyrics. Maybelle Carter penned some of the lyrics in the song you hear here! But as Chet Atkins says..."it's the National Anthem of East Tennessee."

Sorry, but in this case Wikipedia is right; there are many more references to this. However, A. P. Carter transformed it from a hokey parlor ballad to quite something else. Some of the lyrics were misheard by the Carters and became, e.g., the completely meaningless "the pale and the leader." A. P. also copyrighted everything he could get away with. Attitudes were different at the time.

Mother Maybelle Carter is credited with writing this song. Search Helen Carter and there is a version she does as a tribute. It may be that the melody is a old mountain melody and she added the words. Never the less, the best version of this song is a recording she (Maybelle) did with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band years ago and she played the autoharp.

@BoomhaurReplica7 its history is so deep im almost certain that it cant be traces to one person or persons 100%, the carter family made it famous but it predates them, they picked it up somewhere in a song book. if you want to do you history on it the original is called "ill twine mid the ringlets" wikipedia says The song was written in 1860, with words by Maud Irving and music by Joseph Philbrick Webster (1819-1875). but i dont fully believe that. its such a melody that any1 could write
